Bradford And Sanchez To Compete For Eagles’ Starting QB Job

Eagles-QBsIt appears that the Philadelphia Eagles are not ready to hand the reigns over to quarterback Sam Bradford just yet. Bradford is still recovering from his second ACL tear in as many seasons, and he did participate in any seven-on-seven or team drills during three days of organized team activities (OTAs) this week.

“He’s on schedule,” coach Chip Kelly said. “We all think there’s three phases. There’s medical rehab. There is performance rehab, and then there’s prepared to play. He’s probably right on the tail end of medical rehab.”

While Bradford participated in individual throwing drills this week. Kelly wasn’t prepared to say Bradford would be ready for the start of training camp in late July or the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 14.

“Nothing is safe to say, ever,” the coach said.

I understand Kelly and the Eagles being conservative with Bradford but I did not get his follow op comment where the Eagles head coach said that Bradford will be “competing” for the starting quarterback job with Mark Sanchez.

“Everybody’s in competition, and the best players will play,” Kelly said.

Philadelphia fans have to hope that there is not competition for the quarterback spot at the Eagles this summer. If Philly is to compete in the East they need a healthy Sam Bradford under center all summer so he can learn and absorb Kelly’s system as quickly as possible.

The Eagles are not going to the playoffs with Mark Sanchez at quarterback. The more reps that Sanchez gets, are simply reps that Bradford could be using to learn the system.
