Yanks Fans Survival Guide

February 9, 2010

I admit I am a weird mix. I started out as a Mets fan way back in 1968. At first I didn’t think much of those Yankees but in the late 70s I started to watch and respect those Yankee teams (after all those late 70s Mets were bad and we got Yanks on cable too.) The Yanks have had a pretty good history with 27 World Championships, 40 Pennants and 48 trips to the playoffs. Still even the Yankees have had their off moments. After all this is a franchise that did not win a world series in the 80s! In fact they didn’t even make the playoffs from 1983 to 1993. It can be argued that from 1985 – 1991 the Mets were the best team in New York. So Yankee fans need to have some coping skills too. Here are a few helpful hints:

Remember it’s impossible to go 162 and 0. So games will be lost. In fact it’s a good bet that the Yankees will lose between 60 and 70 games this year. Like the man said, “you can’t win them all.” Remember just because they lose some games it doesn’t mean the sky is falling.

Don’t sweat it if you don’t have an all star or at least a Nick Swisher playing ever position. Apparently, even the Yankees have a budget. One I am still shocked they couldn’t squeeze Johnny Damon into. This may come back to haunt them if Damon does go to the much improved Reds, but I digress.

This is a team with three future hall of famers on it: Jeter, A-Rod and Mo. Two other players: Petitte and Posada will receive serious consideration. So that’s kind of cool.

Speaking of A-Rod, remember he is only human, albeit a very well paid, perhaps too well paid human. He is bound to make a mistake now and then. Overall though he’s going to be good for 35 homeruns, 100 RBI and hit around .300. So really we can’t complain.

Finally, remember these are the Yankees and if July rolls around and things aren’t going smoothly they have the resources needed to make a trade to improve the team. Maybe Damon will be a mid season pick up?
