Unity means something in football…it really does.
Antoine Randle-El went home yesterday when he returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 3-year deal. There was something about the 1-2 punch of Randle-El and Hines Ward for the Steelers 2006 Super Bowl win that just made sense. With Hines getting older and Randle-El sort of still in his prime this could be a smart move for the Steelers.
They said they weren’t going to go crazy and spend money like fruitcakes this offseason even thought it’s “uncapped” so I think it’s cool for them to do things “that work”.
Now that the Steelers have Santonio Holmes and he’s already been the hero of a Super Bowl win the addition of Randle-El could mean EVEN more maturation for Holmes and a little bit of a break.
Also, the Steelers took back Ryan Clark after he decided the Dolphins weren’t for him. When I talked about Aaron Kampman I was surprised to see him leave Green Bay and I was thinking that that sort of thing would spread all over the league. I’m glad that it hasn’t. Clark needed to be in Pittsburgh because that was his home.
So, it was nice to see him stay put and it was nice to see that the Steelers can have civil negotiations with their free agents.
I tell you, if the Steelers keep this up they’ll end up overpowering everyone in the league just because they’ll have chemistry and everyone else will not. That chemistry could go a long in deciding who wins the next FEW Super Bowls–not just 2011.
You see, the future of the league is happening right now. Everyone can spend, spend, spend, but they have to have TEAMS as well. A bunch of guys running around on a Football field does not constitute a team. Just ask the Redskins…
