It just isn’t the same now…
The New England Patriots have come to terms with Alge Crumpler on a contract. That sounds great, but they let Ben Watson get away and now they have to settle for Crumpler. It’s not that I don’t like Alge, but…
When he was with the Falcons he did ALOT of good stuff. He caught the ball, he blocked well, he was a great offensive weapon. However, when injuries started to plague him then the Falcons decided to cut-bait and let him go to Tennessee where he started about half of their games while he was there.
Like I said, I don’t have anything against Alge, I just don’t think he’s going to be the answer for New England. He’ll–apparently–be the only Tight End on their team with any experience and that doesn’t bode well for a team that has seemed to “reload” over the years.
Now, they’re grasping for whatever they can get. If they had someone who they thought was the future at Tight End then they could sign Alge and let Alge mentor the dude. However, with Alge being the only experience TE it looks like it’s up to him and I just don’t know if he’s enough.
Alge’s been banged up for a few years now and playing through the AFC East isn’t going to be easy–especially because the Jets are REALLY good now. Seeing that defense twice and getting knocked by them cannot be good.
Plus, Alge seems to have lost his “touch” that he had earlier in his career. He used to have sweet hands and quick legs, but he doesn’t play like that anymore.
It’s a new day in New England. They can’t “reload” like they used to and this signing is “Exhibit A”.
