Inter will face CSKA Moscow in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League and the first of the two match aggregate playoff will be played this Wednesday at 14:45 Eastern US time in Russia.  But before the battle begins lets take a look at the surprising Russian squad.

THE PAST

CSKA Moscow finished their most recent season (their schedule goes from March to December) in fifth place which is the worse they have done in the last four seasons.  The club won the league in 2006 and finished second place the following year followed by third place the year after.  They only allowed 18 goals this year in 30 matches, but the club also only scored 52 goals on offense.  The club has never advanced past the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League in history.

Coming out of a series of draws in the league that have left the Rossoneri 3 points off the title race, Milan coach Leonardo still believes that his side are still favourites to win the scudetto this season.

“Are Roma or Inter favourite to win the title? No, AC Milan is,” Leonardo said. “This is a strange season, every game is a challenge and there are many surprises. There are still seven games remaining and anything can happen.

This is not the first time neither is it going to be the last time we hear of Mourinho’s unhappiness in the Serie A. The ’special one’ has yet again come out saying that he is a very unhappy man in the Italian league. Now if you are an Inter fan, this is not the kind of news you would like to hear before a crucial quarter final fixture in the Champions League.

According to Mourinho, he does not like Italian football and it does not like him. It is as simple as that.

The Pick: Alessandro Costacurta becomes a deserving member of the Bard’s Top 100 today, and I can’t say that it has nothing to do with the fact that his wife is one of the finest specimens God has ever chiseled with his holy… um… chisel, I guess. I mean, seriously, google “Martina Colombari”. You’ll thank me. Just google “Miss Italy” while you are at it and you will see why it is very good to be an Italian soccer star. Costacurta’s career was also a beauty.

Stadio Luigi Ferraris is one of the few Italian stadiums that is home to multiple squads.  Genoa and Sampdoria both play their home matches on the grounds making it one of the most successful stadiums in Serie A so far this season. Genoa is usually a viable contender for Champions League seeding and Sampdoria has been the surprise team of 2009 with one of the strongest starts of any Italian squad.

THE PAST

Algeria has only made it to two Cups in their existence and the squad has never made it to the second round of the event.  In the 1982 Cup the team was completely screwed by the Austrians and West Germans in the final match of group play.  The two European sides played intentionally unaggressive football after the Germans took the lead and as a result both sides advanced to the next round of the event and Algeria was left out in the cold.  The one good thing that came from the experience was that FIFA made a rule that the final match had to be played at the same time to attempt to avoid this type of thing from happening in the future.  The 2010 World Cup will be Algeria’s first since 1986.

Second place AC Milan lost vital ground to Inter Milan last night in the Italian Serie A after losing 1-0 away to Parma. Milan’s loss coupled with Roma’s 2-0 win over Bologna pushed them further down the league standings to position three. Although they have the same number of points, Roma moved up to position 2 because of their better goal difference.

With the games getting fewer and fewer, Milan’s hope rests with Roma. Roma play Inter on Saturday and a win for the Giallorossi would give Milan a lifeline in the scudetto title race.

If you think that the Korea Republic doesn’t have a chance of winning it all then please rent a DVD that highlights the 2002 World Cup.  That tourney Korea Republic proved that you don’t have to have a bunch of star players to have great success in the event.  In fact Korea proved that it can be done through playing excellent defense and great teamwork.  The side really only has one notable player on their team, but sometimes this can be seen as a good thing.  With players relatively unknown to the world that means it is hard to have an in-depth scouting report regarding ever player.  If Korea Republic is to win it all then it will be by stealthy quiet defensive football and winning low scoring matches.  They aren’t a high scoring type of team.

(refreshed) Kalender März 2010 , March 2010Inter has had a very strange month.  Not only did the club not have their genius coach for a good chunk of March due to making a handcuff gesture regarding the ref’s poor officiating, but the club also hasn’t won a league match the entire month.  After starting off 1-1 against Genoa to begin March, the club then went to Catania and was embarrassed 3-1.  Then just last weekend the club tied a solid Palermo club and are now only one point ahead of Milan and the rest of the pack.

And in February I said that the league has no parity.
