Today, Manchester United begins their quest for another UEFA Champions League title and German side Bayern Munich stands in the way.  The first of two matches will be hosted by the German squad, but before the match begins lets take a look at the German side.

THE PAST

Bayern Munich is without a doubt the best German squad in their league’s history and the club has won the title a record 21 times in their long existence.  The club has also won their domestic Cup 14 times and the UEFA Champions League title 4 times as well.  The last time the German side was honored with the UEFA title was in 2001 and most people consider the club’s Golden Years to be in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s when the club was among the best in the world year after year.

A hat-trick in 19 minutes–geez!

Carlos Tevez put in hat-trick against Wigan and in the process became the most lauded man in the building and the shadiest man in the building.

He scored 3 goals in the final 19 minutes of the match to give Man City the 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic.  That’s a pretty amazing feat considering how difficult it is to score just one goal in a match.

However, Tevez was also involved and compared to harsh challenges in the match.  Tevez leapt in the air over a challenge and Wigan’s Gary Caldwell led with one leg.  Somehow this challenge resulted in a red card for Caldwell.

Birmingham City, who are owned by Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung, will play a friendly in the former British colony in July as part of an Asian pre-season tour, the South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday. The Premier League side will meet the Hong Kong international team on July 16 and also play in Nanjing, Beijing and another city yet to be named, according to the report.

“We are happy to arrange the match as part of the Hong Kong team’s build-up for the Asian Games in Guangzhou and the 2014 World Cup qualifiers,” Brian Leung Hung-tak, chairman of the Hong Kong Football Association, told the paper.

The Pick: It is I – the Bard – and I am back to inform you about another one of the soccer legends occupying a spot on my Top 100. But first, let me wish my brother a very happy birthday. Younger sibling, may your next year be better than the last for all eternity. Terrible birthday toast, I know, I’m a Bard, not a bartender. Oh, wait, I’m supposed to be profiling Clarence Seedorf now. Damn, not much space left. Um, four Champions Leagues titles?

Opening in 1906 Birmingham City has been the host to plenty of football matches in its history.  The stadium replaced its former, Muntz Street, which had become to small of a venue to host Birmingham’s matches.  The original capacity of St. Andrew’s was around a very impressive 65 to 70,000 total seats, but like all historically significant stadiums that number has diminished over the years for safety and luxury reasons.

Independence Day!THE PAST

In the first ever World Cup in 193o, the US made it all the way to the semi-final match and lost to Argentina 6-1.  Since that legendary run and the expansion of the tournament, the US struggled historically to accomplish anything of real significance other then that brilliant victory over England in the 1950 Cup.  But in the last twenty years that negative trend has changed and the US had made real strides seeking qualification to six straight World Cups.  The best the squad has done over that time span was a quarterfinals match in 2002 and second round of 16 exit in 1994.  Last Cup in Germany, the US was bounced from the first round of competition.

There have been rumblings for several months now that Manchester United will once again tour the U.S. this summer. Soccer By Ives and Sports Business Journal both report that Manchester United are close to agreeing to a four game summer North American tour.

During the tour United would headline the MLS All-Star Game at Houston’s Reliant Stadium which will be played either July 29 or Aug. 5 according to the Houston Chronicle.

Because the deal is not complete, a person with knowledge of the talks confirmed the negotiations only on condition of anonymity.

The Glass is Half Full
England does have a loaded roster this year and the club is one of the most talented in all of the Cup.  In fact England’s team is so packed with stars this year that it is all but a guarantee that the club will not have many of their great players in the lineup this summer.  Agbonlahor, Bent, Young, and Lennon will all likely miss out on playing time in the event simply because of this loaded roster.

Andrey ArshavinHe needs to keep his talking on the field.

Andrey Arshavin knows that he contributes to Arsenal, but I guess he doesn’t think his contribution is enough.  He thinks that Arsenal needs more starpower to win trophies in England.  In fact, it goes something like this:

“I am still of the opinion that to win trophies Arsenal needs more players.  There is the simple fact that last summer we sold two players and bought only one. So there is an obvious deficit of at least one. Then we lost Van Persie, Gibbs and Ramsey for a long time. So for me it is natural we need new players.”
