Carolina Panthers Cut Jake Delhomme

The Carolina Panthers have cut quarterback Jake Delhomme, even though they owe him more than $12.5 million in guaranteed money. Delhomme who led Carolina to the 2003 Super Bowl, the 2005 NFC championship, made the Pro Bowl, holds nearly every Panthers passing record.

Delhomme’s downfall began in the 2008 playoffs. After helping Carolina to a 12-4 record and the NFC South title, Delhomme threw five interceptions and lost a fumble in an ugly 38-13 home loss to Arizona in the NFC divisional playoffs.

Then Delhomme threw four more interceptions and lost a fumble in Carolina’s Week 1 loss to Philadelphia and things went downhill from there. He ended the season with 8 TD’s and 18 interceptions and a passer rating of 59.4.

Since this is an uncapped year, it is a perfect time for the Panthers to eat Delhomme’s contract. Without Delhomme they are left with Matt Moore as their potential quarterback. While Moore played well in seven appearances last year, completing over 60% of his passes and tossing 8 touchdowns against 2 interceptions I will be shocked if he is the Panthers QB come opening day.

Michael Vick has already said this week that he would like to play in Carolina and if he is not the one, then I expect Carolina to bring in a veteran starter via a trade.
