Cardinals Extend Offer to Whitehurst

Ever since Kurt Warner announced his retirement after the end of the 2009 season, the Arizona Cardinals have been searching for a quarterback. They have been courting two QB contenders – San Diego Chargers‘ Charlie Whitehurst and former Cleveland Brown Derek Anderson. Anderson was released from the Browns earlier this month, and Whitehurst is a restricted free agent.

Word has it that Arizona has extended an offer to Whitehurst. Seattle has extended an offer to him as well.  Signing Whitehurst would cost the Cardinals a third round draft pick. Not sure what the Seahawks would be giving up if they sign Whitehurst, since they don’t have a third round pick to trade.

Whether or not Whitehurst signs with the Cardinals, that doesn’t necessarily mean that talks with Derek Anderson will stop. It would be an interesting scenario to have Whitehurst and Anderson both competing for the starting position, along with Leinert.

Matt  Leinert, the second-string QB under Warner, is remaining with the team. There have been mixed reviews about Leinert; some fans think he should be given a chance at the starting spot, others have unkind words. Let’s face it – Matt’s performance on the field last season was less than stellar. But, that being said, he will have his chance at the starting position. After all, there’s no guarantee that whoever the Cards sign at QB will be the starter. Coach Ken Whisenhunt doesn’t hand out starting positions – those have to be earned.
