The skies are gonna get grayer if they pick the wrong dude…

Chan Gailey and the Buffalo Bills are hinting at a “competition” for the starting Quarterback job this upcoming season.  I figure most teams that aren’t holding onto a franchise Quarterback are going to have said competition every year.  However, this is different.

Chan said:

“We’re trying to leave no stone unturned.  Unless something different happens between now and post-draft, to me it’s an open competition for the job and we’ll see what happens. … We’ve got to see who can rise to the top.”

Umm, that’s code for, “We’re drafting a Quarterback.  In fact, we don’t know which one, we just know we’re drafting one.”

The Bills have now played their hand–in my humble opinion.  Who’s going to be there?  Who are they comfortable with?  Who does Chan think he can work with?

If you’re familiar with Chan’s days at Georgia Tech you’ll remember that he hitched his wagon to Reggie Ball and never let up.  That’s what got him fired.  This will be no different.

If the Bills draft a Quarterback–let’s say Jimmy Clausen–he better be the right dude because Chan will NOT be disloyal to him.  Loyalty is good, but only if the team is good.

So, the real competition is between the rookie and everybody else.  They draft someone and throw him into the fire in the hopes that he can be Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, or Mark Sanchez.

The unfortunate reality is that that will not happen.  It’s too much, too soon, for a very weak franchise that could move to Canada any minute.

The best laid plans…
